Amazon.com Product Description

They say the kitchen is the heart of every home. This Toshiba flat-panel LCD TV was built with the kitchen in mind. Its stainless steel cabinetry will blend in with your appliances, and its water-resistant remote control is designed to stand up to a more wet and messy environment. What better way is there to follow along with your favorite cooking shows than right there in your own kitchen?

The Value of LCD TVs
Aside from their obvious aesthetic value, LCD TVs are much more practical in the home than CRT (tube-style) televisions. They take up a smaller footprint, and thus use up less floor space in the room. Also, LCD TVs are lighter and easier to move around when cleaning or redecorating. The 20HLK86 is only 3.4 inches deep without the included stand. Best of all, LCD screens use less power than CRTs and plasma screens.

Video
Not only does it feature an LCD panel capable of 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and 780 progressive lines of HDTV resolution, but it also has a 15-pin D-sub port, allowing you to connect a PC and have the set double as a computer monitor. While it lacks QAM and ATSC tuners to receive HD broadcasts, it does have a built-in NTSC tuner that will display traditional cable and over-the-air analog broadcasts.

Response time is the interval an LCD screen takes to switch from its darkest color to its lightest color and back again, measured in milliseconds (ms). This screen's response time is 8 ms, which is at the faster and better end of the spectrum. This screen is likely to display cleaner, sharper images during high-action scenes and display fewer image artifacts than other screens in its class.

HDMI Compatible
The set comes with a built-in High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) port. HDMI is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly from a DVD player, next-generation game system, or some other digital video source. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format or compressed. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector.

Audio
The 20HLK86 has stereo speakers and is compatible with the MTS stereo television audio standard, and even features dbx noise reduction. Toshiba's Surround Sound feature uses advanced audio processing to mimic the all-encompassing sound of satellite speakers.

Here is a list of the set's audio, video, and data connections:

  • RF inputs: 1
  • Rear A/V input: 1
  • Rear S-video input: 1
  • ColorStream HD component video inputs (Y, Pb, Pr): 1
  • HDMI digital input: 1
  • PC input (15 Pin D-Sub): 1
  • Headphone jack (mini plug): 1

"Good looking TV - limited remote" 2007-01-09
By W. SZCZECH (New York)
Good looking TV, good picture, easy to mount. Too bad the remote is not a universal style. It will not control the cable box or dvd, so I am using the cable box remote. I did have some initial trouble getting some of the HD channels to work when using an hdmi cable, but I am not sure if that was more of a problem with the cable box. Anyway the problem sorted itself out and is now working fine.

"Great TV for its' intended use..." 2007-01-05

Though I'm tempted to give it a 4.5, this set is good but not great compared to the latest REGZA displays that Toshiba produces. The better panels seem to have slightly better contrast ratios and better panel response times. However, most of this makes little difference for our usage.

FIrst and foremost, this is designed for kitchen use; it has the same stainless-steel finish as many high-end kitchen appliances and fits into our kitchen/breakfast room quite well. It's stylish and cleanly designed, with few frills and smooth surfaces.

It is also well thought out regarding the rear panel. Though it's a bit difficult to remove and insert -- and also a little more fragile than I'd like -- there is a rear cover that hides the connections for power and cable TV. To make this work properly it's important to sit down, place the TV face down (on a soft surface, of course) in front of you (I used my lap), and perform the "operation" there. This makes it far easier to remove the panel, install your cables and connectors, and reinstall the rear cover. Though it's a little finicky the finished product is very nice in a kitchen like ours, where it's easy to see the back of the set.

Picture quality is very good for this price range. I've only used it with regular cable so far; no doubt the picture would be improved by connecting to a digital cable or satellite source.

All in all, I highly recommend this set IF you need something for kitchen use or you just like the styling of this unit.

"Fantastic picture--even with regular coax cable." 2006-10-05

This is a great buy. If you are looking for a bedroom TV or a really nice kitchen tv, or even for LAN parties...(it has a cool handle) this is the TV. IT is $200 cheaper then at Best Buy. HDMI and component video inputs...and doubles as a PC monitor. I know TV's.--I have 6 of them :)

 "Solid performer" 2006-08-14

Pro:

Sharp picture, even over component video - good color response, compares well to other TVs of similar price and size

HDMI input

Very attractive stainless steel case (even the stand is stylish)

Slim, stylish remote

Con:

Remote not universal - too bad because the remote is otherwise really nice

No built in OTA tuner - not a big minus, but worth knowing

This is a good TV for a kitchen (especially if the other appliances are stainless) or a bedroom. Works exactly as advertized - good picture, nice packaging, no frivilous extras. Basic universal remote functionality would make this a five star review.
