"looks great and has an excellent picture" 2009-06-21

What more can I say? Flat screen minimizes reflection. Have had this TV since January 2004 with no problems at all! Remote is well designed and stereo sound even has some bass to it.

 "Luck of the Draw" 2009-01-20
By A. Byro (Manhattan NYC)
I shlepped this thing home and upon plugging it in found that there were large purple splotches in the corners and of the screen which get worse and the unit warms. I know this has to do with the alignment of the beam, maybe a magnet nearby, whatever, but dunno what to do with it. Called Toshiba and was told it is my own tough luck. So I've owned it for about 2 years now. he purple splotches are annoying, but otherwise its a nice TV. Reading through the reviews here I see that essentially buying them is a crapshoot. They're either really nice or real crap. And the likelihood of getting a lemon seems around 40% which isn't too good. Look, if you're looking for a TV, look for something you're less likely to have come out a piece of rubbish. Or better yet- just get a new HDTV. It's worth it, trust me.

Am I the only one that is tired of doing Internet searches for something then clicking on a link for Amazon only to find they do not have the item or the price is not the same as stated on the search hit???

"27A45 Stopped working after only one year!" 2007-07-22
By DC Beachbum (Washington, DC United States)
I purchased the Toshiba 27A45 about one year ago. I was happy with the picture and the sound, especially for the money. Plus, I thought that Toshiba was a reliable brand. After all, I had owned another Toshiba without problems for over 10 years!

I came home yesterday to find the TV would not turn on. I pushed the power button, and nothing! I then did a web search on this model to see if, by chance, there was a fuse or something that I could replace. I discovered that I was not the only person to have problems with this model. From what I gather, the TV has a manufactering defect which causes connections to come loose. Now, after just one year, I'm forced to by another TV. Guess which brand it *WON'T* be!

"TOSHIBA 27A45 HAS MANUFACTURING DEFECT" 2006-07-24
By ROB ARALIGHT (NEW JERSEY)
GREAT PICTURE UNTIL about 40 days of using this TV it went completely DEAD. No power - nothing. Warranty was 30 days so I am in negotiation with seller. Looks like I'm screwed.

There seems to be soldering defects on this model so if you haven't lost the picture yet your lucky. There is a common problem with this chassis as were in some of the older models of sony.. the Horizontal driver transformer as well as the regulator ic has a bad solder joints on them.

HD DVD, DVD, CD PLAYER W/HDMI

          Amazon.com Product Description

Get ready for the next generation of DVD entertainment with the Toshiba HD-A1 DVD player, which is compatible with the new HD DVD format. It combines the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound with the convenience of DVD disc playback. In addition to the new HD DVD format, you'll also enjoy backward compatibility with your current DVD movie CD audio libraries, as well as content burned onto DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/RW. The HD-A1 also scales standard definition DVD output via the HDMI connection to a resolution of 720p or 1080i to match your HDTV's performance. And because the conversion takes place in the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. High definition output is only available from the HD-A1 via an HDMI connection. To get the most out of this player, you'll want to connect it to an HDMI compatible HDTV.

HD DVD movie discs provide the ability to search the on-screen menu, make changes to set-up options or access other menu functions while the movie is playing. Scene searching is facilitated with thumbnail images on the TV screen that allow you to use the cursor to go directly to a specific scene. You can even access bonus material like directorÕs comments while the movie is playing without going back to the discÕs menu. DVD playback features include fast forward/reverse, slow play, step play, time search, and parental lock.

The HD-A1 has built-in processors to handle the multi-channel decoders for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD (2 channel), DTS, and DTSHD. It employs the use of four DSPs to decode the multi-channel streams of the wide array of audio formats. These 32-bit floating-point DSPs are world renown for their high accuracy and are employed in many high quality audio solutions in the home theater market.

This DVD player includes a USB interface on the front panel, enabling you to connect "mass storage classification devices"--i.e., external hard drives, portable thumb drives, and compatible MP3 players/digital cameras--and play JPEG, WMA, and MP3 files. You can also connect the player to the Internet via an always-on broadband connection using the Ethernet port in the rear. In addition to accessing special HD DVD sites, this function can be used to access firmware updates when available. Here's the full listing of video and audio connections:

          • Composite A/V: 1 out
          • S-Video: 1 out
          • Component Video: 1 out
          • HDMI: 1 out
          • USB: 1
          • Digital audio: 1 coaxial, 1 optical

          HD DVD Disc Format
Officially endorsed by the DVD Forum industry organization as the next high-capacity DVD disc, the HD DVD format delivers sharper, more detailed picture performance than standard DVD discs. Moreover, the HD DVD format opens new avenues of interactivity including enhanced on-screen menus, scene searching, directorsÕ commentaries and the potential for online shopping. HD DVD discs can offer both the current DVD and HD DVD formats on one disc, which means that special HD DVD discs will play in older DVD players as well as new high definition players.

          Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

DVD-RAM is the most flexible of the recordable DVD formats when it comes to recording, editing and playback. With a DVD-RAM disc, you'll be able re-record content approximately 100,000 times.

"Good Machine, but don't buy this model" 2008-02-07
By A. Ray Sr. (chicago, IL)
This is a very good machine. It will upconvert regular discs to their highest resolution. It works great with a HDTV and a HDMI cable. I bought mine when it first hit the market, so the prices are fabulous. So why not buy this model?

          1. Only plays at 1080i. 1080p is the highest resolution. You can get the A20/A30 for a similar price.

          2. a LOT of freezing, especially rentals. I don't have many problems with DVDs I own, but rentals freeze 95% of the time.

          3. VERY SLOW. You can go to the bathroom and come back by the time the system is ready. When you push a button, WAIT. It recogninzed the command, but it needs a few minutes to think.

If you don't have a HD player (blu-ray or HD-DVD) then I would by the better model or a PS3.

           "Stay away!" 2008-01-15
          By T. Hendrix
HD DVD is a dead format! Warner Brothers is going to stop producing HD DVD discs soon. Do a search and you will see many articles about this. The only studios that will be making HD DVD's are Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal. Disney, Buena Vista, Sony, Warner Brothers, New Line, MGM, and Lionsgate all release movies exclusively on Blu-ray.

Do yourself a favor and avoid HD DVD players. The reason the prices are so cheap is that Toshiba knows it is dead and is probably clearing out remaining inventory. You've been warned!

"Great item for a great price" 2008-01-08
          By J. Berger (NC)
I got this product for christmas and have been very satisfied with it since then. I have a 720p Optoma HD70 projector (100") that I use with the hddvd player, so I know I am not seeing the entire capacity of the HDDVD player, but let me tell you... going from a regular phillips dvd player with an "upconvert" to this... wow.

I am a college student and have movie nights every sunday night with my friends and they have all noticed a significant difference. The upconvert is slightly better, I would say probably at 15% at best, and seeing the few HDDVDs that I have bought since I got this have shown me how great it is. Transformers looks incredible and Planet Earth is just something else. I am sure that it looks even better on a real 1080p and will probably give it a look whenever I go back home, since my dad has a 57" 1080p TV at the house.

          Pros:

          -Price

          -Fantastic Quality

-Better upconvert (you will never get HDDVD quality with regular DVD, but it does a good job of making it the best it can be)

          Cons:

          -Size (kinda big)

-When I first tried using this product, I got sound with no video and was very confused. It still does this but I have figured out what to do. Even tho it is technically "playing" I have to push the play button to get it to play on the video. Minor inconvenience but whatever... I bought it refurbished and thats probably the reason.

          Conclusion:

I want to give this 4.5 stars not 4, it is a great product, especially with the price. I just didnt like how big it was and that I had to make adjustments to get it to play, but I am sure no one else has this problem so I only mention it in the event someone does and goes WTF?! I am a big movie buff and love watching them, so take it from me when I say that this is a perfect buy. I doubt you need the newer more expensive products that are out unless you really need it to be smaller.

          Equipment:

          Optoma HD70 Projector (720p 100") ~ am using about 85"

          The wall (no projector screen)

I have to say - I have been awaiting my first HD-DVD player for some time with great expectation, and this past Xmas my girlfriend bought this player for me.

The first experiences I have had have been really disapointing.

The unit constantly locks up for seemingly no reason requiring hard power downs (yank the plug). It gets very confused as to what resolution it really should run in when playing regular dvd's. The HDMI function is not really usable as it is (I ended up running component through my Denon to upscale because I could not get the player to work correctly with HDMI).

It will not play any of the new HD-DVD's like The Bourne Ultimatum, or Transofrmers without a firmware upgrade, which seems to be impossible to install. Why on earth Toshiba didn't include a firmware upgrade CD with a currently shipping unit is beyond comprehension. I can only assume that they expect the internet upgrade to actually works, however it does not.

On the bright side Toshiba makes the firmware easy to find on google. The issue, however, comes when you try to actually install the new firmware. After a frustrating weekend trying both the internet upgrade (which just flat out seems to not work at all - I suspect that Toshiba changed the name of the server it is supposed to use to download the firmware and it just can't locate the server), and trying three different computers, 3 different ISO CD Writers, and close to a dozen CD-R's - the firmware remains stubornly un-updatable.

I'd have to say that this is one of the worst hardware experiences I have ever had. Toshiba should be ashamed that they have released a product so poorly designed, supported, and un-updatable.

I agree with all the positive reviews here, but if you need to use closed captioning, you might want to read Freiwil's review of the 46-inch Regza at Toshiba REGZA 46XV645U 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Black He is correct in saying that you have to use the cable box's closed captioning option because CC is not transmitted through the HDMI cable. I called Toshiba to confirm this, and the rep said this is true. I really hate that because the TV has many CC options for font, size, and so on that are not available via cable TV. Also, others have mentioned a set-up issue (the set-up screen occurring every time you turn on the TV) on sets built before a certain date. The Toshiba rep admitted this is a problem, but she mailed a card to insert in one of the slots on the side to update the firmware and avoid this problem in the future. For the price, this is an excellent buy. The technician who set up our TV said that he thought the Sanyo top-of-the-line had gotten around the problem with CC. I hope Toshiba can do that! However, the higher end Sanyo we priced was $1000 more than the Toshiba.

          By Paul Manuel (East Kentucky)
I've had mine for about a month now and can't get home quick enough to watch it every day. Compare it side-by-side with mid-level Samsungs and Sonys, and you'll have to agree the picture is every bit their equal, and it costs hundreds less. I'm kinda picky and have never had a TV that I could leave in "Automatic" picture mode before, but I do now. Reflections from the glossy screen are not bad at all in my living room, the sound is better than in my other LCD TVs, and recent versions of the firmware have eliminated the setup nag at turn-on (mine, built in May 2009, does not have the issue.) I'm not saying it is the best TV out there, but if you give it a fair look you may just take one home. Toshiba has become serious about playing with the big boys in LCD TV, that's for sure.

           "Excellent TV, Great Value" 2009-07-08
By James A. Lawrence (Washington, DC)
Having purchased a 32" Samsung 720p LCD TV previously, I was all set to purchase another larger 1080p 120Hz model for our newly-renovated basement. Decided to do some cost comparisons, and found this TV on Amazon at a great price. Had everything I needed and more and was several hundred dollars less then comparable Samsung and other higher-end models. I grew up with an old Toshiba picture tube TV, which lasted many years, so I was not concerned about quality. Amazon contracted sale out to Crutchfield, which has great customer service. The delivery guy (who I believe worked for a Crutchfield sub-contractor) was delayed by mechanical problems with his truck and ended up having to work overtime on a Friday evening in the pouring rain to deliver my TV. Another company might have had its driver reschedule the delivery, but when the driver arrived he said that he knew I was waiting and he didn't want to disappoint me. How great is that?

I've had the TV for about a month now and no complaints. Picture is great (especially with an HDMI cable purchased from Amazon for only $0.22 -- do not pay full price for these cables at a big box store!). CNET review said the black levels were "subpar", but go and look at the comparable TVs side by side in a store and tell me if you can really see a difference. Nintendo Wii also looks great, though not sure I notice any upgrade with the "Game" picture mode feature. Understand some of the complaints about the high-gloss screen and bezel design, but I think these features actually make the TV look great when you hang it on the wall, and for basement viewing there is almost no glare. A lot has been made about the 240Hz refresh rate effect of this TV. I was told by numerous people that since I like to watch a lot of sports I shouldn't go for anything less than 120Hz. I figured 240Hz would be twice as good. To be honest, I've done a comparison with my old Samsung (32" 720p 60Hz), and it's difficult for me to see a real difference when watching baseball, golf, basketball, etc., so that's something you'd want to consider when thinking about the price increase between 720-1080p and 60-120-240Hz TVs. The true difference I notice is in the brightness and crispness of the picture. And, although I don't watch a lot of standard def cable, there is noticeable difference with the new TV -- Toshiba really does a great job with this upscaling feature. One little annoyance was that there's some kind of bug that causes the setup menu came up every time you turn on the TV, but that's a very minor quibble, and Joe D's June 8, 2009, review tells you how to fix this problem (thanks Joe!).

Overall, this is a great TV at a great price. As another reviewer said, it's nice to see Toshiba back in the game.

"Better than Samsung and Sony!" 2009-07-01
          By juliette montague (seattle)
i lucked out with the 47-Inch Toshiba REGZA 1080P 240Hz LCD HDTV

Delivered yesterday and Out of box HDMI Color and picture-perfect and not even yet calibrated.

2 yrs ago i bought a 40" Samsung LCD HD with Best Buy's 4yr warranty; good thing because the back-lighting started going out in shadowy patches. The GEEK SQUAD guy came ASAP and reported that the "accountants" decided it was more "cost-efficient" to swap the TV than fix it. I got credit for an equitable swap and went to store the next day. I was debating between another (larger) 46" LDC Samsung or Sony when i saw a 47 "Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U with Dolby sound. I was never happy with my Samsung audio so that got my attention. (the last Toshiba i had was a tape-deck! so this was a gamble) When i saw it had ClearScan 240(tm) with Backlight Scanning, i said, "I want that one." (and paid the additional price)

So far my new Toshiba TV is fantastic! (i bought another store warranty. The old days of 20 year working TVs are long gone.)

"Good Picture, Barely Adequate Volume" 2009-09-01
          By Catman (Oregon, USA)
We bought this for the kitchen. Just a little adjusting of the color was needed for a very good picture. It saves a lot of counter space over the 14" CRT TV it replaced. As others have mentioned, maximum volume is very low. The level has to be set to near maximum and isn't quite enough when other kitchen appliances like the microwave are running . My other complaint is with the remote. Unlike our other Toshiba which shares a nearly identical remote and almost every other remote ever made, Toshiba has interchanged the Channel and Volume controls. This remote has CH on the left and VOL on the right. Volume on the left and tuning on the right has been the standard ever since the first vacuum tube radio. Why Toshiba decided that wouldn't work for this TV is a mystery.

Those few quibbles aside, we're generally pleased with it.

TV was exactly what we wanted and looked just like it did on the website. I was skeptical about buying a tv online and having it delivered by UPS (not always the most gentle in moving boxes around) but I am completely satisfied with the product. The packaging was in perfect condition when delivered and no problems with anything broken or not working. Definately recommend this product to others looking for a great deal on a tv/dvd combo.

          By R. Rudman
I enjoy the lightness of this TV for my camper. It has a clear picture and the screen can be tilted back and forth. Had I read the previous reviews about the volume, I would have continued searching for another model/brand. Please be advised that the sound is very low.

This item was a gift to my sister in California who lives in a wooded area - the TV got to her just fine and she loves it - Comcast came out and hooked up her cable and told her it was one of the best TVs they have seen. They said that the tuner inside was so great that she was able to pickup signals that other's could not - Based on her satisfaction with the Tv - I would highly recommend it!! - My sister was very happy which makes me very happy.- Thank you for the fast shipping and excellent product at such a great price.

Picture quality is excellent -- including the DVD. I have no trouble with the sound either -- I saw complaints about that, but I don't understand why since it works perfectly for me. So far everything is working very well. I do like the 19 inches for the kitchen -- it looks great too. I have satellite TV, I don't know if that makes a difference to the quality of the sound. I'm pleased.

I bought this TV for our bedroom; it replaced an old cumbersome set. We have cable, so we are thrilled to be able to get most programs in either analog or digital format. I note the sound is not as loud in the digital programs; however, it is more than adequate for bedroom use. I love being able to play DVDs on the set, and the clarity and color are certainly great....in my opinion! The set would be a little too large for use in my kitchen, but it is great for the purpose for which I bought it.

This television is exceptional. Not only for the price, but the picture is incredible. I love it and when my other 2 small TVs (that are at least 10 years old each) bite the dust, I'm going to buy 2 more. Reading other reviews for this helped me decide to purchase this brand. I'm so glad I did.

What a joy. We really like it. For years we have had a 10 inch CRT TV in our kitchen. We recently installed Verizon's FIOS so I decided to buy the smallest LCD TV I could find. Then found this in Amazon's outlet warehouse as an open box item. I don't know why we waited so long to buy and LCD TV. Its great.

           "Outstanding value" 2009-09-06
          By Kikaiju (USA)
After shopping all over the net and all the major retail chains, I was never able to find a small, affordable LCD for a bedroom. Everybody had 42" sets for $500, nobody had anything decent for around $200. Finally ended up at a regional electronics chain where I found this gem buried in the back with Coby, Viore and other junk brands. This Toshiba was the best by far, rivaling much larger sets. In the end, I had to choose between this Toshiba and a similar Philips. What made the deal was the complete range of inputs on the Toshiba: S-video (a must for me), VGA, two sets each of HDMI, and component, and 1 composite for games or whatnot. Many lower-end sets sacrifice some or all of these inputs meaning you'll have to go swapping plugs all the time. This Toshiba has it all covered.

Setup was easy. The stand pops down and has a slide lock. Plug in the power (two-prong plug) and video source and go. After letting it warm up, picture quality out of the box was very good. The brightness was a touch high but that's normal for a new TV. It found all the local HDTV channels very quickly (something my old HDTV converter could never get the same twice) and properly labeled all of them. A basic thing but important. OTA picture is great, very solid and clear. 1080i signals look great even with down-conversion. Connected to my satellite box over the S-video, the picture is sharp and bright and looks as good as I have ever seen it. The set appears to handle legacy 480i signals just fine which is more important to me than HD performance.

Connected to a Wii over component video, the 480p signal looks as good as the Wii can. Not pushing the set very hard here. Have not tested the HDMI connection since I don't have any HDMI devices. Also have not tried out the PC VGA connection.

Sound-wise, it does sound tinny as other reviews have said, which is why I only gave it four stars. But the set does have an optical out feed for use with a stereo system, and RCA audio out as well. Lots of ways to run the sound through something better. I am sort of glad the set is more concerned with picture than sound. Toshiba seems to have thought this way on purpose: you can totally disable the TV's internal speakers via the audio menu. That said, the speakers are fine for everyday use. Most people can live with them just the way they are if they turn the bass up to full.

The remote is functional and decently laid-out. The only notable thing is that you have to use the input button to switch inputs. Many TVs let you use the channel up/down buttons for this. Not Toshiba. The remote will control a Toshiba DVD player if you happen to have one. My Tivo was able to adopt the Toshiba remote codes on the first try.

For me, one test of how well a product works is how far into it I can get before looking at the manual. Most men are probably like this. Happily, I have not yet needed the book. The setup menus are intuitive and clear and simple.

Conclusion: an excellent choice for a kitchen or bedroom or anyone on a budget. The value for the price is outstanding and there are very few compromises. Highly recommended.

Only time will tell if this TV will last but I recieved it just several days after I ordered it for my elderly mother who wanted to replace an old TV in her bedroom. For now the unit will only be used as a regular television with nothing else attached to it.

The TV was super simple to setup. The colors are great and it is meant to be watched from at least 5 feet away I would say and you will see a clear picture. Mom will be watching it from about 8 feet away.

I was concerned about the other reviewers' issues with the attached stand but mine only had plastic wrap which I easily removed. You then rotate the stand to its proper position manually. There is a switch that you will see once you rotate the stand, to 'Lock' or 'Unlock'

My TV also came with a comprehensive manual and the box itself had illustrations for the basic unpacking of the unit including the rotation of the stand.
